Does It Matter Circa 2023

It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.

— J. Krishnamurti

Six months ago, this sidewalk home wasn’t there.
I’ve adjusted to it.

Hotel neon beckoning “Vacant.”
I instantly adjusted to the irony.

“Do Not Enter” sign in the background.
I’ve adjusted to the photo gawd’s blessings.

Working poor driving a Mercedes past the homeless.
I’ve adjusted to this too.

The homeowner’s walker at their front door.
I’ve adjusted to it after a couple of days.

The schmuck who tagged a sidewalk home with spray paint.
Makes my soul, and eventually my body, sick.

It’s no wonder why Oliver Anthony, the voice of despair, blew up a month ago. “Rich Men North Of Richmond” (lyrics) is rocketing him to fame and describes the root causes of this week’s unhealthy photo. His “I Want To Go Home” (lyrics) is becoming an anthem for so many whose health is failing because of a profoundly sick society.

And yet … I am in good spirits. Seems I’m adjusting well to sickness.

And now … know the photograph.
