There is a grief when who we think we are dies.

“USA. USA. USA.”
“Greatest country in the world.”
“If you don’t love it, leave it.”
Distasteful at best. Boastful patriotism isn’t patriotism, it’s nationalism. My grandma taught me freedom demands we earn non-Americans singing our praises, not us. True patriotism is focusing on the hard work of keeping our democratic republic alive.
